Dear patrons of Upright Cabaret,
L.A.'s famed Upright Cabaret, for the past two years, has traveled to Palm Springs with its motley crew of Broadway stars, T.V. personalities and talented local artists presenting incredible intimate concerts (under the stars) that have featured the "who's who" of the entertainment industry including American Idol finalistAdam Lambert and How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris to name a few. Mrs. Warren was featured on the Grammy Award-nominated original cast albums of all three of these shows.
Joining Mrs. Warren will be a stellar supporting cast including American Idol finalist and West End player Tom Lowe(West End: Cats, Les Miserables), who recently won much acclaim for his portrayal of "Enjolras" in last year's Les Miserables at the Hollywood Bowl, Marty Thomas(Broadway: Wicked, Secret Garden, Xanadu), and Elizabeth Brackenbury (Reprise's Sunday in the Park with George) with Upright Cabaret Music Director Chris Bratten.

Finally! Cabaret with no minimum and and no cover charge!! What?!? I hear you asking, how is this possible? Simple, it's on the radio. Satellite radio, SiriusXM.
Starting this Thursday (and every Thursday after that) at 11PM Eastern 8PM Pacific you can hear a brand new half hour radio cabaret of mine called Sly Crooner of Swanktown wherein I, your pal the lounge lizard, mix up martinis and stir up modern urban fairy tales for the terminally stylish and bon vivant hipsters such as yourselves.
It will also air on Sundays at 3:30PM 12:30 Pacific and Tuesdays 4PM 1 Pacific. And it's FREE! (My favorite price point.) Plus you don't have to dress or find parking. Or you could subscribe to the podcast on iTunes. Either way you can't get cabaret with less pain than this. So how can you lose? You can't.
Give it a whirl, give it a swirl, Swankly,

CREATING A CABARET ACT By Michael Goodrich
WHAT IT CABARET? Cabaret is the experience of being private in public. Andrea Marcovicci defines it as "an intensely personal evening of song and stories, delivered in a simple, honest way in an intimate space that shatters the fourth wall. The audience participates in a direct, emotional conversation with the artist and leaves feeling contacted and personally touched."
You have no character to hide behind, no sets, and, more often than not, no props. It's just you, a piano (sometimes a guitar or a combo), and the audience, often in a venue small enough to feel like someone's living room. It's a chance for an audience to get to know you in a way that makes them feel as if they just made a new friend. This type of intimacy can be unnerving for even the most seasoned performer, but the results can be greatly rewarding.
Cabaret can also be a way to put your self in business. You assemble a creative team, choose the music, find a venue, pack the house, and showcase your talent, possibly establishing a second career alongside your work as an actor. This is not to say that cabaret is a get-rich-and-famous-quick scheme. Like any part of the entertainment business, it takes talent, commitment, and dedication. The performers who have successful cabaret careers are all of the above. Learn the craft, be dedicated, and enjoy the process; the rewards can be much more than monetary.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER I know what you're thinking: "I can't do this" or "No one will come" or "I can't afford it." Well, first of all, if you can sing and act, you can do this. Second, your initial audience will be your warm market; however, if you're talented and you do things right, you can build a following. And last, producing your own cabaret show doesn't have to cost a fortune, although it will certainly require an investment. Creating promotional material on your computer can be a big savings these days, and if you use a piano accompanist, there is no need to spend a lot on charts; sheet music will suffice. Do not, however, skimp on your pianist. He or she is the backbone of your act; the support of an accomplished accompanist is invaluable. Usually your accompanist will also wear the hat of musical director. Make sure you find one with a good stage personality - someone experienced in this genre. It's great to have a colleague to play off of during your show.
Of course, the good ones don't come cheap, so get referrals and start negotiating. The same goes for your director. A good director will bring out the best in you, and you'll be assured a polished and professional-looking show. Hire one with cabaret experience and be willing to make the investment. If you're going to do this, do it right.
Most acts have a theme, a thread that ties all the songs together. The theme can be a personal idea or a tribute to a composer or lyricist, such as the songs of Johnny Mercer or Joni Mitchell. There must be an honest communication between performer and audience during which you reveal your truth through the music and patter.
The structure of a show can vary, but the length is usually about an hour. During that time you will probably have anywhere from 12 to 15 beats. A beat is a song or the patter between songs. Patter is not to be taken lightly. Too much can be annoying to an audience, and too little leaves them feeling as if they haven't gotten to know you. It must complement the songs and be relevant to moving the act forward.
Your show needs to be balanced and have an easy, natural flow. There must be ups and downs in the energy, as well as humor and sentiment. Don't succumb to the temptation to make it one-dimensional, either always funny or ballad-heavy. For some excellent in-depth guidance on the ins and outs of putting your act together, try The Cabaret Artist's Handbook by Bob Harrington (published by Back Stage Books, a corporate sibling of Back Stage).
FINDING SUPPORT Open mikes abound in Los Angeles and New York, and they are a great place to try out new material, work in front of an audience, and polish your act. They are also a good place to meet other cabaret enthusiasts and build an audience. Most cabaret folks are very supportive of their colleagues.
The New York cabaret scene is very well known, but cabaret is also thriving in many cities across the country. Los Angeles and San Francisco have vibrant cabaret scenes, due largely to the efforts of Cabaret West, an organization dedicated to cabaret and its artists. There's a monthly newsletter that will run your bio and info on your upcoming show at no charge; it also contains a calendar of events, including a complete list of open-mike and performance venues in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Plus, you'll have access to the organization's mailing list when you're promoting your show. Membership is $25 per year.
On the East Coast, there is the Manhattan Association of Cabarets & Clubs, or MAC. Its members also have use of the organization's mailing list for promotional purposes, and free or reduced-admission seminars covering art- and business-related topics are sometimes offered for members. Membership is $50 a year. Two New York City websites are Stu Hamstra's Cabaret Hotline Online and the Cabaret Exchange, which was started by booker Scott Barbarino. Both offer calendars of what's on and where, news, reviews, interviews, and a message board, among other things.
DEALING WITH VOCAL DEMANDS The nice thing about cabaret is that it's your show. You choose the songs, the theme, the length, and the patter. You can choose to make it as vocally challenging as you'd like, but keep in mind what you will be doing in addition to your act. If you're currently in a musical or play, your cabaret nights will be restricted to your nights off or late shows after your curtain comes down, and the vocal demands of your job will inevitably impact your cabaret performance. If you have a 9-to-5 job where you're required to speak most of the day, you'll also have to deal with vocal fatigue. Still, if you're speaking and singing correctly, your voice can take a lot of performing. As I've said before, the best way to avoid hurting your voice is to have a solid vocal technique.
Remember that cabaret is not about what a terrific singer you are - even though you may be a terrific singer. If you make your show about your amazing voice, you'll lose your audience. Select songs that are consistent with what you wish to say as an artist; don't just pick a song because you sing it well. Cabaret is not about stringing a bunch of 11 o'clock numbers together and showing off your vocal prowess. It's about connecting with the material in an authentic way and then communicating that to your audience. Do that and you're likely to learn a tremendous amount about yourself as a performer and a person.

My week started on Tuesday at Blame It On Midnight to see CAROL CASS who is really amazing. For a nice treat, click on her name in blue for a clip from her "Postcard To Lena Horne" tribute show. Then it was open mic time. I tell you all it is becoming the hot spot for desert talent so get on down there tomorrow night for the last show of the summer season. But I have it on good authority that it will resume next Tuesday in The Amigo Room at Ace Hotel. The times are still not clear to me, I heard 4 pm to 10 pm? Can that be? Anyway I plan to get there around 6 or 7 until I find out more info.
Friday and Saturday I went to see Louche' and help out with the sound as much I could. It is a very hard show to present given the venue and complexity of the numbers but they got enough on video to put together a presentable DVD to hopefully sell it to some other cities.
Saturday morning I was up early again so I could go and meet "The Breakfast Club" at Spa casino breakfast buffet. I was a few minutes early so I stuck a dollar bill in a penny slot machine and within a couple of plays I cashed out with $10.70 - not bad hey. If you are interested in joining us we meet at the cashier line at 9 AM. The group was pretty much the same as last week, Fleet, Jersey, Pinkie, Gina, Jerry, Carol, and this week Tony joined us. Tony is writing an original musical and has been doing two new songs every Tuesday at Blame for us. I wish I had the money to invest in this show because it has the best songs, so clever, fresh, funny, sad, they have it all. He is planning to workshop it at ANMT very soon and the rest will be history.
Sunday, Rick and I drove into Long Beach to visit our friend Jim, have Chinese food and go to IKEA. You would think that with all the week end residence, Alexander Homes, lots of empty land near the railroad lines, and gay men, that IKEA would be smart enough to build one in the desert? But no such luck.
I wanted to go see Fleet and Laurie at Monday night cabaret at Zoso but it took me so long to do this week's newsletter because we have cut our Time Warner Road Runner service to a slower speed to try and save a little dough like so many others are doing. But yikes.... it is taking around 10 hours instead of only 6 hours. My back is killing me so it looks like I will be staying in and having left over Chinese food!
Yes the number of people doing email blasts has really dropped lately. And the number of donations has dropped even more, from almost nothing to less than nothing. So if you have Pay Pal and want to send off a little something-something tp help defray all the expenses, please do so.
That was my week. how was yours? See you soon.

NEW CABARET GROUP FOR PALM SPRINGS AREA IS LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
Several of you have joined the NOTES FROM PALM SPRINGS GROUP recently - probably thinking you were
also joining the new CABARET ASSOCIATION OF THE DESERT, but now that
you are a NOTES MEMBER you need to go to GROUPS to join CAD.
As many of you may know, I started LA CABARET @ YAHOO GROUPS which now has around 175 members. Now that I am in Palm Springs, I keep hearing the same thing from the local cabaret artists - that there is no group that represents them and therefore communication can be difficult at best.
Well hopefully CABARET ASSOCIATION of the DESERT - or CAD, will help us tie up all the loose ends. For this group I have selected the popular NOTES FROM NICOLAS SNOW to host this new group for several reasons: besides being an International site, it has break out groups for regions including PALM SPRINGS, with 95 members (many who joined from my invitation) and there a lot of members there who are in the entertainment field. This site also has many features that are not offered by Yahoo, Google, etc. including videos and photos, web links, event calendar, bold colors and borders, but most of all it is free and very, very easy to navigate and join.
So if you are a Desert area resident, or just love it, and would like to see the Cabaret Community build it's strength and support, please take a minute to join Notes From Palm Springs and then join CAD. Current Notes members - from any region, can simply join the Palm Springs Notes and CAD - so you have no excuses. JOIN NOW - there is a link below which can take you directly to Notes From Palm Springs

AND HERE IS ONE OF HIS WONDERFUL CATS:
RICE ON THE LEFT AND PEPPER ON THE RIGHT
IMAGINE.....
Dreams precede action. To demand the impossible, you must think it first.
There is more value in life than anyone can imagine. So never stop imagining.
Everything you imagine plants a seed.
The more beautiful and compelling it is, the more of life's miraculous energy you give to it.
And that makes what was once just imagined, real.
What you now see all around you, was first imagined.
When you meet with difficulties, it can be easy to imagine the worst. But that only magnifies your troubles.
Instead, imagine the solutions. Imagine the very best.
Imagine the most wonderful version of your life, and the very act of imagining begins to pull you towards it.
What is possible is limited only by what you sincerely imagine for you to be possible.
See goodness everywhere, and bring it all more fully to life.
And remember to sing all your troubles and worries away!

RECIPE CORNER
Okay here it is... someone emailed me and said to stop teasing them with the promise of this recipe. It seems they have had it at Spago's and want it BAD!
SPAGO'S MEAT LOAF (Note: you may want to double the recipe so there are plenty of left overs - I do)
1 small onion, minced 1 teaspoon minced shallots 1/2 pound mushrooms, rough chopped 1/4 medium sized eggplant, diced 1/4 cup half and half 1 pound ground lamb 1 pound ground veal 1 pound ground pork 1 egg, lightly beaten 1 clove garlic, minced 1 teapsoon Chopped thyme 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cumin 8 slices bacon To: Sharon McKnight - use babababababababacon Salt & Pepper to taste
Saute onions, shallots, mushroom and eggplant in large skillet until translucent. add half and half and cook until liquid is absorbed. Let cool.
In a large bowl, mix together lamb, veal, pork, onion mixture, egg, and garlic. Season with thyme, cumin, salt, and pepper.
Line a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan with 1/2 of the bacon. Fill pan with meat mixture. Cover meat mixture with remaining bacon. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until meatloaf is done and juice runs clear when pierced. Allow to cool for 5 to 10 minutes so juices are absorbed back into meatloaf.

Ten Rules for Good Auditioning By Jodie Langel, Performer/Author
Jodie premiered on Broadway as Cosette in Les Miserables while still attending NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and later went on to play the role of Eponine. Her Broadway tour credits include Martin Guerre, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Cats, She recently completed Bernstein's Mass at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center with The Baltimore Symphony and was awarded 2008 "Excellence in Performance" for her starring role in the New York Musical Theater Festival's Production of "I Come For Love". Jodie was also awarded "Best National Anthem Singer of 2007" by the New York Mets. To find out about her book and summer workshops, see below and/or contact her at: jodie@makingitonbroadway.net
1. Have great audition material! Take classes, listen to I-tunes, spend hours on Youtube, go to concerts and cabarets and get the PERFECT audition song - a song that you LOVE and shows YOU - your personality and voice. I will talk about this later. Don't use those 16 bar audition books or Musical Theater Anthologies. EVERYONE and their sisters and brothers will use the same book and auditioners will hear those songs over and over. Be a detective and find GREAT music. That is my specialty and I can't tell you how important it is.
2. Confidence. If you don't feel good about yourself, you can't give a good audition. Period. Be as prepared as you can be. take a long shower and think about everything you want to accomplish that day. Do your hair GREAT, put your best outfit on. Go over your music ad nauseum so you know it and are confident with it, then go in, and do it! I swear, auditioners can smell when someone isn't confident. Your audition starts as soon as you walk in the door. Never forget that. Not when you start singing. Walk with confidence. There is no reason that you shouldn't!!!!!!!
3. Love the song you are singing. This could possibly be #1. I work with so many students who are kind of blah about the song they are singing or are singing the song because they think the song is "appropriate" for the audition but they really don't like it. NOOO don't do it to yourself! You have to LOVE what you are singing. How else can you give a good audition? Throw out all the music that your singing teacher TOLD you to sing and you don't like that much. Throw out the song that you don't connect to that much. Get a book that is only songs you LOVE!
4. Say hello when you walk in! I can't tell you how many people DON'T do this. Again, I go back to my tip "Your audition starts as soon as you walk in. Come in the room with a nice, open demeanor and say "hi!". It speaks volumes. They already like you. You are confident. You are someone I want to work with!
5. Have your music marked correctly. Oh boy... this is a biggie. Most of the students I work with blow their auditions because their music is not marked correctly and they have a disaster at the beginning of the song (i.e. they don't know where to come in) or at the end of the song (they don't know where to stop). Then they look at the accompanist like "Um, What's going on?" Has this happened to you? C'mon. Be honest. DONT LET IT! Go to a coach you trust and get it marked to its last life. Trust me, spend the money for a coach and get it right! Your audition depends on it.
6. Have a 16 bar cut, 32 bar cut and the whole song! Again, i can't tell you how many students I have that sing a 16 bar cut and then the auditioner says to them "Do you have the rest of the song?" and they DON'T. Then the auditioner will say "Ok, thank you!". So have 16 & 32 bar cuts as well as the entire song prepared for every piece of material you have.
7. Take your songs out of context. This is another thing I teach in ALL of my classes. Unless you are called back for a specific role in a show, you should take the songs out of context. You are not Eponine in Les Miserables with dirt all over your face singing "On My Own". You are you, singing this song because of what circumstances YOU bring to it and getting what you want because YOU decide all of these things. Do your homework, take it out of context, bring YOUR life to it and invest in the story and what YOU need to get by the end of the song. Then it's personal, interesting and different than everyone else.
8. They want to see YOU and who you are. I think we forget this because we are trying to get a job and be the role they are looking for. What auditioners really want to see is who you are, and how you can interpret this character. They want to get a glimpse of you.
9. Eye contact. Some people love it, some hate it. Gauge the room when you walk in. If you have a song that requires it, test it out. If they are uncomfortable then simply place your imaginary person just over their heads. Don't look up too high or have wandering eyes. Remember who you are singing to and what you want in the song.
10. Remember YOU LOVE THIS! We love to sing, and perform, right? It is so easy to forget this as we go from audition to audition, putting ourselves out there, facing rejection and being vulnerable. But hey, when it all boils down to it, we love this!!!!!! If you remember that before you go in, I can assure you, you won't be as nervous. Think of it as a chance to perform, and LOVE it.
