| A Little Night Music is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler. Inspired by the Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night, it involves the romantic lives of several couples. Its title is a literal English translation of the German name for Mozart's Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major, Eine kleine Nachtmusik. The musical includes the popular song "Send in the Clowns".Since its original 1973 Broadway production, the musical has enjoyed professional productions in the West End, by opera companies, in a 2009 Broadway revival, and elsewhere, and it is a popular choice for regional groups. It was adapted for film in 1977, with Harold Prince directing and Elizabeth Taylor, Len Cariou, Lesley-Anne Down and Diana Rigg starring.Palm Canyon Theatre's production will feature live music with Denis Moreen on piano. Starring in this limited engagement affair is Mark Almy, Se Layne, Pamla Vale Abramson and Nicholas Sloan.WITH LIVE PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT BY DENIS MOREEN

 MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15th at 7:30 FOR CABARET OPEN MIC AT THREE SIXTY NORTH!

Hello Readers:
This last week we had two open mics so I am going to save you some reading time and just list all the fabulous singers who turned up.
Starting with THREE SIXTY NORTH on Wednesday night: BILL, RON COHN, THOM MCMORRIS, DOUG GRAHAM, GEORGE LOUIS, LINDSAY OUELLETTE, PAT MCCANN, CHARLES FERRIS, JEROME ELLIOTT, JONATHAN THEANDER, COURT GRAVES, ALAN JON, WAYNE CURTIS, DONNY TEETERS, RAFF CORRELL, CLAUDIA SUSSMAN, AL T-MAN, ERIC SPITZ, DAWN SPITZ, VICKI KNIGHT, & LYN STANLEY. All 21 singers like the new venue very much and I know the 360 loved us. So we are coming back on Wednesday, February 15th for another night starting again at 7:30 PM. Get there early for a great table or call for reservations. The food is great and although the happy hour drink prices as it turns out are only if you buy them at the bar, I still think it is a wonderful addition to the cabaret scene in Palm Springs. They loved that we completely filled every seat in the house and are trying to arrange the calendar so we can make it a weekly event.
Then on Saturday night at THE RED TOMATO it was another full house bringing in singers: DONNY TEETERS, GERALD COLUCCI, GEORGE LOUIS, LINDSAY OUELLETTE, DAWN SPITZ, ERIC SPITZ, LYN STANLEY, RAFE CORRELL, JUDY DEERTRACK, ALAN JON, PAT MCCANN, TONY SHONE, & BILLY. BILL BECK the owner at TRT made an announcement that he is stepping down from the day to day operations due to a health issue but will be coming in to see us on Saturday nights. We wish him the best. Meantime, the rest of the staff is working very hard, their new chef is making new fans and bringing around some old ones with his fabulous cooking and we are really happy to be part of it all.
I know we mentioned that we 'might' be at Mesquite Country Club on this Wednesday night, however we have not gotten the final word. If we should find out more I will send out a special email blast on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Well that is it for me, have a great week and see you soon? Les Michaels
JOEL BAKER IS AVAILABLE: to help you with learning new material, song choices, pick the right key, etc. A one-hour session is $40, and a half-hour (in case you only want to go over a couple songs for open mic or whatever) is $25. RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
RED LOBSTER'S CHEDDAR BAY BISQUITS (Posted especially for Barbara Wisby)
Ingredients:
For the biscuits: Cooking spray 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 1/2 teaspoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening, at room temperature 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 6 ounces grated yellow cheddar cheese (about 1 1/4 cups) 3/4 cup whole milk
For the garlic butter: 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 clove garlic, smashed 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
Directions:
Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat to 425 degrees. Lightly mist a large baking sheet with cooking spray. Make the biscuits: Pulse the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a food processor. Add the shortening and pulse until combined. Add the butter; pulse 4 or 5 times, or until the butter is in pea-size pieces. Add the cheese and pulse 2 or 3 times. Pour in the milk and pulse just until the mixture is moistened and forms a shaggy dough. Turn out onto a clean surface and gently knead until the dough comes together. Do not overwork the dough or the biscuits will be tough. Drop the dough onto the baking sheet in scant 1/4-cup portions, 2 inches apart, and bake until golden, 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make the garlic butter: Melt the butter with the garlic in a small saucepan over medium heat; cook for 1 minute. Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley. Brush the biscuits with the garlic butter and serve warm.

Top Ten Tips When Creating a Cabaret Show
By Michael Miyazaki
Michael Miyazaki is a cabaret artist based in the Washington DC area. In addition to performing, Michael does extensive repertoire consulting and research for cabaret performers, as well as directing. Michael's blog, Miyazaki Cabaret Report: DC and Beyond (CabaretDC.wordpress.com) provides news, reviews and resources for anyone with an interest in cabaret, with a special focus on performance activity in the Washington DC area. Michael is also the DC correspondent for Cabaret Scenes magazine, writing a monthly Washington activities column and providing reviews and other content.
1. Remember the character you are playing is "you". When you're doing a cabaret act, the most important thing to remember is that the character on stage is you, or at least an idealized (hopefully) version of yourself. You are responsible for every thought and word expressed up there whether sung, spoken, written by someone else or ad libbed on the spur of the moment. It's OK to portray a character once or twice in a show, but the audience has come to see YOU!
2. Know what your audience expects of you. If you have a following because of your theatrical work, recognize that and honor it. If there's a role you're famous for, a type of character you usually portray, honor the audience's expectations, so they'll see some of that. We all know the experience of going to see an artist and being disappointed because they didn't do what we most wanted to hear them do. Know what is unique about YOU as a performer, and why someone should come see you as opposed to any other entertainment options they have.
3. Surprise your audience. However, cabaret is the perfect forum for showing what a 3-dimensional artist you can be. Show a different side of your personality that audiences don't usually get to see. Challenge yourself and the audience in the process.
4. Think of the structure of your act. The biggest mistake that musical theater performers make in cabaret is thinking "I have ten songs that I know, so I should do a show." Pay attention to the structure of your show and its flow. A good approach is suggested by cabaret icon Andrea Marcovicci when she suggests that a good cabaret show is like a blind date with the audience. You open pleasant and general, talk about the weather, and reveal things about yourself gradually until you come to a big emotional payoff. You don't enter, say hello, and then announce that you're suicidal because your boyfriend just dumped you and the subsequent eviction would have you living on the street if it weren't for the fact that you stole a key to the methadone clinic you frequent.
5. Have a dialogue with the audience. The point of cabaret is that you can have a direct experience with the audience. You can look in their eyes. You can walk around the room and engage people directly. Yes, there are certain numbers where you can erect a "fourth wall", but an entire evening of that is, by definition, distancing. Treat the audience as your scene partner. A great technique is to script lines that you hear in your head in between the phrases of your song. E.g. "Some day, he'll come along." Who? "The man I love." Oh, what'll he be like? "And he'll be big and strong." You go for that? "The man I love." Are you sure you haven't met him already? "And when he comes my way..." etc. Similarly, it's useful to have a mental script in your head that you go through during the music break in a song
6. Assemble a great team and trust them. Have a music director that makes you feel great when you're singing to their music. And make sure that you feel you get the support you need for your performance. Have a director that you trust as an outside eye to make sure your show flows, your material suits you and that you look good up there.
7. You have the flexibility to sing a song the way you want to. As theater artists, we constantly have to "color within the lines" in very specific boundaries set by the playwright, composer & lyricist, director, choreographer, lighting designer... In cabaret, the songs are an expression of you. They should all sound like you're the first person to ever sing something and that you're making it up on the spot. As such, you have flexibility to choose arrangements with keys and tempos that suit you. You can sing the intro, skip it, or put it in the middle of the song. You decide what verses you want to sing and in what order, and even if you want to quote another song.
8. Good patter should set up the song, not give it away. The biggest mistake that people make with patter is saying "This next song is about..." and giving a description of the following song so complete that there's no reason to hear it. It's very akin to those movie previews that make you feel you've seen the whole movie already. If you have a really cool take or cool info that will help the audience get a better grip, that's great: "Dorothy Fields spent a large part of her early career writing for Cotton Club performers, and one interpretation of this song is that it is about what the world is like for someone passing for white" followed by On the Sunny Side of the Street. Or it can just set a mood: "OK, maybe the last six relationships didn't work out, but I still believe in believing in what I want" into The Man I Love.
9. Funny patter can replace a comic number. The world of comic songs is comparatively small, and the good ones (e.g. the entire work of Goldrich and Heisler) have been well farmed. However, if you're stuck for a way to lighten up a section of your show, take Andrea Marcovicci's advice once again, and look to tell a funny story or lighten the portion of your show with patter rather than a song.
10. Take names. Think of yourself as a business. Be sure to collect names and build your mailing list for future appearances.
